ONE OF THE BEST INTERVIEWS EVER CONDUCTED [John Podhoretz]
I'm completely serious. Read the transcript of our pal Hugh Hewitt's on-air conversation today with Joel Stein, who spent a decade writing silly and impish stuff about celebrities for Time Magazine before getting a peculiar gig as a columnist with the L.A. Times. Today Stein published a column called "I Don't Support the Troops." This afternoon Stein went on Hugh's show and was calmly, straightforwardly and meticulously eviscerated. Back to Brangelina with you, Joel Stein -- and bravo, Hugh.
me: ..except that Hewitt didn't come close to addressing the logic of Stein's main point in the op-ed, but instead went on and on "eviscerat[ing]" Stein by implying that his lack of knowledge about military salaries means that his argument is unsound (huh?).
Stein: "I don't support the war, so I would find it very hard to support the actions of the troops in a war that I don't agree with."
Clearly Stein was on the program to defend precisely this, and Hewitt decided to play rhetorical games instead. Worst interview ever.
podhoretz: no, he was making the point that Stein knows nothing about the military, has never met anyone in the military, and doesn't honor the military.
i report. you decide.
